No matter what our age is, we all love to visit zoos. In our busy lives, we cannot afford the time to visit the forest to enjoy the scene of wild lives. But visiting the zoo is a matter of a few hours. In a very short time, we get to see different animals, birds, and whatnot. Zoos are short forms of zoological gardens that have a huge area where wild animals, a variety of birds and reptiles are captivated in their suitable environment. Here we are going to write about the National Zoological Park or Delhi Zoo and their vast range of animals. It's a huge area of 176 acres and situated in the middle of urban Delhi near the old fort. The Delhi zoo was built many years after New Delhi was built. It was inaugurated in 1959. This place is home for almost 1350 animals and  130 species. The animals of Delhi zoo are kept in their natural habitat environment and well taken care of. You can walk around to see the Delhi zoo animals or you can take a vehicle to roam in the Delhi zoo. Food is not allowed inside the zoo but there's a canteen in there. Now enough with the description of Delhi zoo, let's talk about the Delhi zoo animals which is why you are reading this….

Delhi zoo has a variety of animals, birds, and a special underground reptile house where all the reptiles are kept. It has animals and birds like gir lion, leopard, jaguar, chimpanzee, hippopotamus, spider monkey, hyenas, giraffe, zebra, elephant, African wild buffalo, emu, crane, peafowl, barn owl, grey hornbill, etc. And also reptiles like a crocodile, gharial, cobra, Boa, Indian star tortoise, and many more. Those animals and reptiles sound deadly and interesting. So let's find the origin and information of Delhi zoo animals.

Animals

  • Gir Lion: This majestic beast also known as Panthera leo persica is a renowned creature of the Delhi zoo animals. This Asian lion was its threshold of extinction but thanks to the Gir sanctuary who saved its life by preserving them. Their origin Gir lions are comparatively less aggressive than the African lions.

  • Leopard: This beast is the fastest among all the other Delhi zoo animals. Also known as a panther. This creature is the strongest among the big cat family and has the ability to climb trees and hunt from there. Because of their black spots (which is also known as rosettes), it can be rarely noticed in the tree. Male leopards are larger in size than the female ones. They can be found in Africa, Central Asia, India, and China.

  • Jaguar: The name jaguar came from the word "yaguar" which means "he who kills with one leap". This creature is one of the main attractions among the Delhi zoo animals. This beast is the third-largest in the cat family after lion and tiger but has the strongest bite than any other cat family. They are originally from America and can be only found in America (South America, Mexico, Central America). Some people mistake Jaguar with a leopard, but jaguars have short legs, small size heads and they have dots in their rosettes.

  • Spider Monkey:  This species of monkey belongs to the ''Ateles''. They can be found in the tropical forest of Central and South America (Brazil, Mexico). When they hang in the trees with their well-gripped tail and other limbs that shape looks like spiders, that is why they are named as 'spider monkey'.

  • Hippopotamus:  This animal always loves to stay in the water. For this reason, the Greeks called them 'river horse'. This giant beast is the third largest land mammal and originated in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the San Diego Zoo, hippos are closest relative to whales, dolphins, and pigs.

  • Chimpanzee: Belongs to the species "Great Apes". It resides in the tropical forest and Savannas of Africa. Their whole body is covered with black or brown hair except for the face. The male ones are stronger than female ones. They have different personalities as well. Female chimpanzees love to groom themselves. They remove ticks from another's body.  They are human's closest living ancestors who share almost 98% DNA.

  • Hyenas:  This creature is popularly known as scavengers who usually steal the prey of lions and tigers. But they have a pretty good hunting skill too. They are famous for their 'laugh' which is actually the way of their communication. There are three types of them, brown hyenas, spotted hyenas, and striped hyenas. This animal of Delhi zoo belongs to savannas, sub- deserts, and forests of Africa and Asia.

  • African wild buffalo: They prefer to roam in the land full of grass as their main food is grass and leaf or stem. They can be seen in the savannas, grassland of Africa.

  • Elephants: Elephants are the largest land mammals. And they are also famous for their long trunk and big ears. Their trunk weighs up to 150 kgs and can lift up to 250 kgs. Elephants use their sense of hearing and smelling as a primary sensor rather than vision. They also have a very bright memory. So far only three types of species are identified, Asian Elephant, African bush elephant, and African Forest Elephant.

  • Royal Bengal Tiger: Probably the most attractive animal among other Delhi zoo animals. This majestic beast is famous for its characteristics. It has a unique combination of stripes. This creature is a born killer. And the male tigers are very caring towards the female and their cubs. These tigers can be found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and China. This is the only species of the tiger that can be found in the mangrove forest and in Sundarbans which is also a mangrove forest.

  • Zebras: This African animal lives in a herd. And they have a very unique white and black stripes which make them different from others. There are three types of species of them, plain zebra, grevy's zebra, and mountain zebra. They are closely related to horses and donkeys. They don't live in a particular area, they tend to move from place to place for fresh grass and water.

  • Giraffe: This animal is the tallest mammal in the world. Their height can be up to 18-20 ft. They have a unique square brown spot on their whole body. Thanks to their long neck they can eat leaves and fruits from tall trees. Even their tongue is also very long up to 21 inches. This animal can be found in the savanna in Africa.

Birds

  • Emu: This Australian bird is the second largest bird in the world after ostrich. They are omnivores birds and can live without eating up to weeks. They have tiny wings that are kind of useless. They use their long legs to walk and run.

  • Crane: These tall birds are migrating birds. They migrate during winter.  Not all their species migrate for a long distance.  They are usually brown, white, and grey in color.

  • Peafowl: Peafowl is the collective name of peacock and peahen. Peacock is usually green and blue in color and has a beautiful long tail which is printed with an eye-shaped design in golden, green, and blue. Peahens are not as beautiful as peacocks. The green and blue peafowl originated in India and Srilanka.

  • Barn owl: This bird is a nocturnal bird-like other owl. This bird is available in almost every continent except Antarctica.  They are excellent predators at night. And they are extremely silent, they don't even hoot like other owls.

  • Grey hornbill: Many types of grey hornbill are there, like Indian grey hornbill, African grey hornbill, Malabar grey hornbill, Sri Lanka grey hornbill, etc. They are easily identified by their long and thick beaks.

Reptiles

  • Crocodile: These reptiles are the largest amongst all other reptiles of tropical areas of America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It has a broad v-shaped jaw. This creature silently stalks their prey from under the water and hunts them down. They swallow the whole prey because they cannot chew or break them like other animals.

  • Gharial: Gharials have a unique long snout and they live in fresh and clear water-like rivers. This reptile is usually seen in the Asian region. They are less dangerous than crocodiles and mostly eat fish.

  • Cobra: This category of snakes is the most dangerous animal in the Delhi zoo. They are extremely venomous. Cobras can be found in the Asian region and the African region. The characteristics of Asian and African cobra are completely different.

  • Boa: This non - venomous snake can be found in the tropical forest of Central, South, and North America. They are less harmful to humans. They hunt on the small birds and mice.

  • Indian star tortoise: This small species of tortoise is an endangered animal. They can be found in India, Pakistan, and Srilanka. The Indian star tortoise is very beautiful among all the star tortoise variants. This animal of Delhi zoo is under danger because of the new species.

As we know there are over 1350 animals living in the Delhi zoo, so it is nearly impossible to write down about each and every one. So we have noted down about a few Delhi zoo animals which are the main attraction. In the Delhi zoo, they perform "Reservation Breeding" to some animals, which means they breed the same category animal in the zoo. And this activity has been successful. Even some animals have been distributed to the other zoos in Hyderabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, etc. Overall this zoo in Delhi is a fun place to be with family and children. Kids will get to learn about many types of animals, birds, and reptiles which will help them to grow knowledge about animals.
