The Zoological Garden ( Alipore Zoo ) is the oldest in India. The Alipore zoo Kolkata also witnessed a tiger attack on January 1, 1996. The Alipore zoo tiger attack took place when two men entered the enclosure of the tiger named Shiva with a garland. It is reported that the names of the two men were Prakash Tiwari and Suresh Rai and both of them were drunk. When they approached nearer to the tiger, it pounced on them and Prakash in the neck, where he got killed instantly. Suresh was badly injured. Suresh definitely had a miraculous escape. Zookeepers immediately opened the iron cage and Shiva went inside, leaving the victims. This was the second incident reported of the Alipore tiger attack, whereas the first one was when the tiger named Shaitaan killed its keeper inside its cage. After this incident, the zoo authorities managed to build an " increased protective wall" as earlier there was just one fencing around the enclosure. Measures were taken like the bar inside the zoo got closed and drunken people were not allowed to enter the zoo after that incident, and even tranquilizer guns were kept ready especially around the tiger enclosure.
