The zoological garden, ( Alipore zoo) is the oldest in India. It is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Kolkata other than Victoria Memorial, Birla Planetarium, etc. It has been open since the year 1876 and is 46.48 acres. The Alipore zoo remains open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This place draws a huge crowd daily and especially during winter season i.e. the month of December and January. People come here to explore Alipore Zoo Animals, who are there present in a huge number starting from wild animals, domestic animals, birds, reptiles, apes, and a lot more.
The Alipore zoo ticket is affordable. The price of the Alipore zoo ticket is Rs.10/- for children up to the age of 5 years and Rs.30 for visitors above age 5 and the price of the aquarium is Rs.5 /-. As the taking of selfies has become a trend then you must know that the camera charges are NIL but video photography charges Rs.250/- per hour.

Alipore zoo animals include Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Elephants, One- Horned Rhinoceros, White Tiger, Zebra, Deer, Antelope, Ostrich, Monkeys, Asian Elephants, Hippopotamus and more. Talking about Alipore zoo animals they have The Bengal Tiger which ranks among the biggest wild cats found to date. This zoo has the national animal of India i.e. The Bengal tiger and it is also known as the Royal Bengal Tiger. After that, you will also see the Asiatic lion which is endangered because of its small population size and area of occupancy. It is also named as the "Indian lion" and the " Persian lion". The Alipore zoo animals also have Jaguar. The Jaguar resembles the leopard because of the spots present on its body. Being the keystone species this animal plays a significant role in getting a stabilized ecosystem. You will also see the hippopotamus which is a land mammal. Their physical appearance resembles that of the pigs, and their name hippopotamus comes from the Greek word which means river horse. They stay in mud or water during day time to stay cool, and they give birth in the water. They are said to be aggressive and unpredictable. After this, you will also see the spotted deer which is called the Chital. They are golden in color with white spots on their body, but their lower parts like the abdomen, the throat, legs, and tail are all white in color. Then comes the Chimpanzees which is simply known as the chimp. They are the species of the great ape, and covered in coarse black hair but have a bare face, fingers, toes, and palms of the hands and soles of the feet. You will also see Slow Loris. They have round heads and large eyes and have a toxic bite. The Alipore zoo animals also have Indian Wolf and Zebras, Rhinoceros, Giraffes, and of course Monkeys and primates like Slender loris, Hamadryas baboon, Ring-tailed lemur. Apart from this the Alipore zoo animals also have the other category that is the reptiles. Talking about reptiles the first thing we can talk about is the Saltwater crocodile. It is one of the largest living reptiles. It ambushes its prey then swallows it whole right after drowning it. Then comes the mugger crocodile which is also called the marsh crocodile. This crocodile preys on fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals whereas the younger ones prey on insects. The Alipore zoo animals consist of other reptiles too like Gharial, King Cobra, Indian Python, Ratsnake, Indian Cobra, Yellow anaconda, and more. Now coming to the birds, the Alipore zoo animals have birds like Little Corella which is also known as bare-eyed cockatoo, little cockatoo. They have downy feathers that are also used in traditional ceremonies and also in traditional dances to adorn head and armbands. Then comes the Cockatiel which is also called the weirdo bird. They are the only member of the genus Nymphicus. They are kept as household pets and also companion parrots and are easy to breed. Indian peafowl could be seen too in this zoo apart from Koel, Emu, Griffon Vulture, Openbill Stork, Blue- Winged Macaw, and more.
The Alipore zoo got new animals in the year 2019. It was just before Christmas and the new year holiday season which is the time when the zoo attracts more crowds than usual days. Alipore zoo new animals were Four Wild Dogs and Two Female Lion Cubs. Alipore zoo new animals that have the two female lion cubs, had names Isha And Nisha. The Alipore zoo new animals attracted more visitors.
The zoo has modernized by installing glass wall enclosures, constructing aviaries, and also has installed several plastic crushing machines that can crush all the materials that were made out of plastic including bottles in the zoo. The zoo has trees like saal, mahogany, teak and more. The zoo made a record in the year 2018 when more than 1.15 lakh people visited the zoo. The zoo always looks forward to adding more animals and make it more attractive to visitors. Alipore zoo also was best known as the home of the Aldabra Giant Tortoise Adwaita who lived for 250 years and died in the year 2006. The zoo also started an adoption scheme in the year of 2013 after which 40 animals were adopted in the same year. The Alipore zoo also has food stalls from where you can get patties, popcorn, cold drinks, tea, etc. You can cover watching the whole zoo in 2-3 hours. And when you exit from the zoo right across the road you will find the Alipore zoo aquarium which is also interesting to see. The popularity of the zoo has been increasing tremendously day by day.
